Don Smith is a board-certified adult and child psychiatrist specializing in the true integration of psychopharmacology with psychotherapy. He believes in active collaboration with patients to achieve treatment goals, while reducing the need for psychotropic medication when appropriate. He encourages patients, within an empathic and supportive environment, to gain a better understanding of themselves in order to facilitate positive change.

Smith has always been interested in how the physical affects the mental and vice versa. Staying true to that notion he obtained a Bachelor’s of science degree in both psychology and biology from the State University of New York At Binghamton. At Michigan State’s College of Human Medicine where they used the biopsychosocial model is where he received his Medical Degree. His medical school training fostered a desire to be an advocate for children’s health which led him to completing a general pediatrics residency at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, after which he continued interest in the mental health of children, and more specifically how environmental as well as biological (genetic) factors impact the mental health of children led him to sub-specialized training at Sheppard Pratt University of Maryland where he completed his adult and child psychiatry training.

Smith entered private practice in 2003, with a focus on providing psychoanalytically oriented, cognitive-behavioral, and supportive psychotherapy in combination with medication management. Smith is experienced in the treatment of a variety of psychiatric conditions with children and adults, including mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, adjustment reactions, psychotic disorders children behavioral disorders, and the care of psychiatric conditions in those with mental retardation/developmental disabilities. In addition to providing individual psychotherapy combined with medication management, Smith offers coordinated medication management for patients who see another provider for therapy.
