Dr. Don Smith is a board-certified adult and child psychiatrist specializing in the true integration of psychopharmacology with psychotherapy. He believes in active collaboration with patients to achieve treatment goals, while reducing the need for psychotropic medication when appropriate. Dr. Smith has always been interested in how the physical affects the mental and vice versa. His medical school training fostered a desire to be an advocate for children’s health which led him to completing a general pediatrics residency at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, after which he continued interest in the mental health of children, and more specifically how environmental as well as biological (genetic) factors impact the mental health of children led him to sub-specialized training at Sheppard Pratt University of Maryland where he completed his adult and child psychiatry training.
Dr. Smith entered private practice in 2003, with a focus on providing psychoanalytically oriented, cognitive-behavioral, and supportive psychotherapy in combination with medication management.
